Stelvio Pass

Often the highest mountain in the Giro d’Italia cyclerace, the Stelvio pass is a huge challenge with its height of 2758 meters. This makes it the highest prepared mountain pass in the Alps after the Col d’Iseran. The road is crowded with motorbikes and fast sports cars.

I myself rode the Stelvio with the racing bike from the east side from Prad am Stilfserjoch. There the 25 kilometer climb starts with a height difference of 1850 meters. No fewer than 48 hairpin bends ensure variety.

The photo was taken at an altitude of 2550 meters and shows the Franzenshöhe mountain hotel in depth. At the top it was packed. After that, the descent over the Swiss Umbrail pass was a quiet relief.
